• 5 granny smith apples
• 1 lemon
• 2 tsp brown sugar
• ¼ cup white sugar
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• refrigerated pie crust
• 2 tsp melted butter
• heart cookie cutter

Step One: Cut off the top of each apple and discard

Step 2: Scoop out the inside of each apple. Discarding the core and keeping the good stuff in a separate bowl to be used for the apple pie filling. Be careful not to puncture the peel. We used a melon baller to make the process a little easier.

Step 3: Squeeze lemon juice over all your apple pieces.

Step 4: Mix the cinnamon and both sugars together with the scooped out apple.

Step 5: Unroll your pie crust and slice into 1/4 inch strips for the lattice pattern. To make the top dough heart shape, simply use a small heart cookie cutter.

Step 6: Cover the top of the apples with a lattice pattern. We used 5 strips for each apple.

Step 7: Brush melted butter onto the crust and sprinkle with sugar.

Step 8: Place the apples in a baking pan. Add just enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown. Serve with vanilla ice cream and a cold glass of milk and your guests will be wowed with your gourmet cooking skills.
